The Adelaide Congress Hall Band recently performed at an open day for the Adelaide Gaol, now a museum located near the Adelaide Parklands.
The band played at the Sunday 17 May event, which drew 850 visitors coming to learn about the building’s history and enjoy the music, stalls and food on offer.
The Gaol was opened in 1841 and housed 300,000 prisoners until its closure in 1988.
The Salvation Army’s connection to the Adelaide Gaol dates back to its beginnings as a corps in Port Adelaide in 1882. The Salvation Army regularly assisted inmates and ex-inmates of the Adelaide Gaol with issues of alcohol addiction and criminal reform, conducting extensive visits and offering comfort and advice. Officers also held regular services in the chapel.
