• Salvationist Olympians in Paris


Kenya’s Wiseman Were (left) and Zimbabwee’s Tapiwa Makarawu have parents who are Salvation Army officers.

Two African athletes with Salvation Army links have competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics – Kenya’s Mukhobe Wiseman Were (400m hurdles) and Zimbabwe’s Tapiwa Makarawu (200m).


Mukhobe came fifth in the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles with a time of 49.22. His brother Derick, and father Major Barak Were, are Salvation Army officers.

 

Tapiwa qualified for the final of the 200m after finishing third in his heat with a time of 20.16 seconds. He came sixth in the final with a time of 20.10 seconds.

 

Tapiwa’s parents are Salvation Army officers, Majors Richard and Listener Makarawu, who serve in Harare, Zimbabwe.


Congratulations to both athletes for their hard work, dedication and achievements. The Salvation Army world were cheering them on.
