Resources now available for International Day of the Girl
Today is International Day of the Girl, and The Salvation Army will join millions around the world to mark the global observance day initiated by the annual United Nations.
The first International Day of the Girl was held on 11 October 2012, and it has been held annual since then to recognise girls’ rights and the unique challenges girls face around the world.
Many Salvation Army corps around the Australia Territory will hold special services on Sunday 13 October to honour the day.
The Salvation Army International Social Justice Girls (ISJG) has put together resources, including a video, to assist in planning and preparing for the celebration of this day and its theme, ‘Pathway to Mental Health: Mind, Body and Soul’.
“The Salvation Army acknowledges the fundamental value of all girls,” says Australian Salvationist and ISJG member Cherise Holley in the four-minute video. “And we are called to act on the Bible’s commands to seek justice, to speak up for the voiceless and to hold up the rights of the afflicted.
“General Lyndon Buckingham recently reflected on The Salvation Army’s strategic plan, and he’s challenged us to focus on three key pillars – people, mission and legacy. We care for and value girls. It is our mission to see mutual flourishing between and by all people as we contribute to the fight for greater equality for generations to come. We
invite you to join in this vital mission. How will you live out this calling in your corps and in your community?”
In the video, a range of other young ISJG members and senior staff from around the world also share insights, thoughts, Bible verses and perspectives.
“Our ISJG committee of girl advocates spanning across six continents, representing 14 nationalities and 22 unique stories, inspire us to participate in projects such as the International Day of the Girl, which we are now celebrating for the third consecutive year,” said Kayla Calvo, Chair of the ISJG. “We invite you, on this International Day of the Girl Sunday, to celebrate girls worldwide today.”
